Hiring a criminal?

The hacking scandal, which has intensified over the last few days, provides further suggestion that Andy Coulson, former Communications Director for 10 Downing Street, was involved. The scandal is no longer about hacking the phones of celebrities – deleting messages from a missing teenager’s phone is clearly tampering with evidence. Not to mention the hurt it caused to the Dowler family.

Should the Prime Minister have hired Mr Coulson? With the benefit of hindsight, the answer is “obviously not”. But at the point when he did hire him, the Prime Minister had little way of knowing what his prospective employee had or hadn’t done. People who commit criminal acts look the same as the rest of us. Furthermore, everyone should be presumed innocent until proved guilty.
